For this module, my lecturer (Mr.Romzi) gave us a task to research on 3 or more sculptures and also learn more about the sculptor that created the sculptures we chose to research on. After researching, we have to present it during class.
I chose to do a research on Paige Bradly's sculpture "Expansion", Bruno Catalano's sculpture "Le Grand Van Gogh", and lastly, Carl Fredrik Reutersward's "The Knotted Gun". After the presentation, my lecturer suggested that I should pick Bruno Catalano to be my main inspiration for this entire semester.
However, it was difficult to do some research about this sculptor. The information online was unhelpful that I had to change my main inspiration to something else. So, I started to do more research and I came across this American sculptor named Alexander Calder and he is known to be a very famous and one of the most important sculptor in the 20th century.
I chose to do one of Alexander Calder's sculpture called "The Arch". I found it very interesting as different people can have different views on what this sculpture looks like. Some people would think that it looks like a graceful bird and others may think that it is a boomerang. These are the boards that I have designed for the introduction of my chosen sculpture and sculptor.
On the 6th September, my classmates, my lecturer and I met up at our chosen site. Our chosen site is located at Taman United and the site is called sculptureatwork. At this site, we were given a task to observe the area and learn more about the sculpture we are looking into.
We visited the site and met the workers. After roaming around the site, we were given a chance to learn more about sculptures and was able to ask the workers some questions about the machinery and how they do their jobs. One of the workers told us that they will provide the drawings of the building to us when we visited them but due to some private and confidential information, we were not able to obtain the dimensions that we need in the building itself as we did not get to measure the building and there were certain places where we were not allowed to access.
We were split to two groups, one will do the design and composition about the history of the sculptures, the topography and the culture history of the site and the other will do the AutoCad drawings of the building in detail. I was assigned to do the culture history around my site as I live around the neighborhood. My group consist 2 other people which is Tan Xi Chen and Royce Leow.
So, I spent my time going around my neighborhood looking for older places and the most popular places. I took photos and did some research about the residential areas around the site and I composed it to an A1 board. I did research on the total population of the people living in Old Klang Road and I also did research on places that were closed down or upgraded. Here are the boards that my group and I designed in order.
As soon as we complete our boards, we have to create and design a parasitic architecture that can fit 2 designers. In this individual task, I look back at my inspiration and use the curvy element into my design for the parasitic architecture. The parasitic architecture was supposed to be attached to the column at the courtyard area of the site. However, this was designed before the AutoCad drawings were done and it turns out that I was not able to place my parasitic architecture on the column as the column is too short for my parasitic architecture to hold on to which is why I moved it to the creative office area where my parasitic architecture will be attached to the building itself like a parasite.
After completing the parasitic architecture, I started to draft out my plan and section drawings for my final assignment. I started to carve out a space where the people can go through with a nice and smooth flow. The people will first enter and roam through the space that displays Alexander Calder's artworks and then go through the sculptural element that also display his artworks and also the wired sculpture. After going through the sculptural element, the people can see a pop up display area where there will be other people's work of art displayed there and then the people can also see the performance right after they scan through the gallery.There is also a bar and refreshment area for the people to get some drinks and relax.
