UPDATE ON BOOKLET WRITING

6c52f5cd-01e5-4815-8ebe-db95fd03fe90.jpe

For my write up for the booklet, I had to add on and to also make some major changes to it according to how Ms.Norji wants it to be. Ms Norji would occasionally check on my progress and give comments on what needs to be added and what needs to be changed on my google document. I was told to simplified certain parts and also to add in more details on the task given to the students. I was also told to add in the progression for each group throughout week 4-10 as the work needs to be shown to Taylor's.

In this process, I had to check on the blog links Ms Norji provided me from each and every group, ensuring that I am writting in detail and that it is clear enough for other people to understand what I am writting. I struggled a lot in terms of finding the right words to use in the write up as I realised that some of my wording is a bit repetitive. I spent most of my time editing the write-up and doing my best to ensure that the work is shown clearly for each group. It is hard for me to write up the progression from the start to end of this project as I have to write up for not only my own group but for other groups as well and the only information I can get is from their blogs and I find some of the blogs unhelpful as there were not enough information for me to be able to elaborate on what task they did on campus and on site. However, I tried my best anyway to elaborate for each group. I am happy and I feel relief that I managed to complete this. Unfortunately, I am unable to share the link to the booklet so.. here it is!

Introduction

As part of a more enhanced and holistic curriculum, the MPU4 Community Service Initiative module of Taylor’s University was developed with the aim of developing a community of tertiary students to be more responsible, be more sensitive and be more knowledgeable about the community and their needs. This 2-credit-bearing module will require all students to be engaged in some form of Community Service or Service Learning before they graduate as “Service-learning is a form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address human and community needs together with structured opportunities intentionally designed to promote student learning and development.” (Jacoby 1996 p.5)

A series of community-based services will be rendered by approximately 97 students of The Design School (TDS)of March semester intake starting from March 2019 of BA (Honours) Interior Architecture (BIA) and  Diploma in Interior Design (DID) students. The beneficiaries of this service will be the Orang Asli of Suku Temuan community identified by Yayasan SALAM. The task assigned was to transform the mini library for the Suku Temuan Orang Asli which is located atKampung UluMelaka, Serendah, Selangor about 53.3km from Taylor’s University.

The main objective of this program is to nurture a culture of respect and care towards all members of the community among the more fortunate students of Taylor’s University.  Other than that, it requires students to learn by giving service to others. The selected community may be from any village, an orphanage or less fortunate society In this process, students to recognize the community and take steps to meet the needs of others, enhance their critical thinking, creativity as well as demonstrate awareness on their reflective skills. Moreover, the students will learn through participating in service experience and will have the opportunity to use their skills and knowledge lively. Lastly, they will have the opportunity to develop their basic skills and knowledge in community service strategies, tactics, and techniques, including the art of volunteerism.

The purpose of this project is to expose students to a real community and work as a team through embarking a series of community works;

1) Enhancing mini-library with new look + ambience

2) Reference Book + Reading materials donation

3) Furniture Donation

4) Creating ‘Fun Learning Aids Material’

Week 1 (1st April-7th April 2019)

On the 4th April 2019,  six of the Diploma in Interior Design [DID] students who are representing the team, pay a visit and observe the condition of the existing site. Students travelled to Serendah together with Ms Norji and Mr Jeffrey and reached the place at 10.00am. Students had to measure the site, take pictures and interview the representative from the Orang Asli community as well as Yayasan Salam, taking related information that possible to be upgraded.  Sadly, the condition of the site was quite awful especially the unpleasant smell coming from the flooring, poor condition of shelving and the book racks, and the dusty look of the electrical appliances all over the space. Apart from that, there were a lot of termites surrounding the areas which made the mini-library look disgusting. Students spent almost 3 hours on site gathered findings before any decision made. On top of it, the students need to get the feedback from the community so in future they will benefit the new outlook of the mini-library.

In regards to the transformation of the library, there are few requests made by the community itself. It is listed as below:

  1. Provide a temporary plank to cross the drain

  2. Change the lighting

  3. Fix the broken fan and add new wall fan

  4. Provide new flooring

  5. Change the furniture

  6. Paint the interior and exterior wall

  7. Fix the shelving

  8. Provide new reading materials

  9. Provide a shoe rack

  10. Provide new whiteboard

On the 5th April 2019, 97 of students who enrolled in the Community Service Initiative module gathered at E5.04 studio The Module coordinators, Ms. Norji and Mr. Edwin, briefed the detailed task that required to be executed on site as to avoid any confusion and miscommunication in the future. The module had to be divided into three phases of delivery;

1. Week 4: Phase 1- Presentation on the proposal and budgeting

2. Week 10 -12: Phase 2 - Transformation of the mini library.

3. Week 14: Phase 3 - Submission of the e-Portfolio

Besides that, the DID students team presented the findings gathered on site in the form of drawings and video documentation.

The students in group 6 also shared their plan to spread awareness for this project to the class and encouraged the class to help out in that process by sharing the social media links and asking their friends to follow their pages. The presentation took 2 hours and 30mins.

Group 1- Progression (week 4-10)

During this period of time, the students from the group spent their time mostly on finding people who are willing to sponsor and also following up with people whom they have asked if they are willing to sponsor. The team managed to get Kansai paint to be the main sponsor for the CSI project. The students who are under the book donation team were struggling to find people who are willing to donate old books that are in good conditions. Meanwhile, the furniture team were able to 1.5K sponsorship and in total, they managed to collect a total of  2.5K for the furniture funds. Bryan managed to contact a number of churches and some were able to donate some furniture and some children books as well. The students also went out to buy furniture at IKEA with Ms Norji and Mr Edwin.

Moreover, some of the students from group 1 also volunteered to help out during the 2nd phase for the renovation of the mini-library by transporting the furniture, assembling the furniture which they bought from IKEA and arranging them neatly on-site. On the launching day, the students came early in the morning to the site to set up the place and to make it look nice and welcoming. The students were proud and they felt that their hard work through the tough challenges they faced during the process of planning and working on site was worth it.

Group 2- Progression (week 4-10)

After the presentation day, the students had to work out on whether the colour theme they picked out were suitable for the exterior mural or not. After that week, the students went out to buy the materials and tools that they needed for the work they will be doing on-site. The students went to the closest DIY shop called Mr.DIY which is located in Sunway Pyramid and they managed to buy what they needed.

List of items they bought:

  • Roller Paint Brush

  • Paint Tray

  • Dust Pan

  • Broom

  • Broom Brush

  • Floor Soap

  • Hose

  • Buckets

  • Disposable Gloves

  • Heavy Duty  Garbage bag

  • Acid-Based Detergent

  • Metal Scrapper

  • Masking Tape

On-site, the students started off with the cleaning process by removing the dirt from the wall by using the broom and wash later on with water. The students also clean the surrounding areas of the mini-library and started the base coat to the walls before the next group goes on site for the painting of the mural. When it is the next group of students turn to go, the students first tape the wall as guidance for the mural and started the painting process. After the launching day, the students were happy as they have learned a lot from this experience that they had and were happy to think that the work they did together as a team will be able to make the children smile.

Group 3 - Progression (week 4-10)

As for group 3, their work is mainly executed on site. However, during this period of time given to them, they spent their time planning and finding the right lock set for the windows and the materials they need in order to do their task on site. Some of the students from group 3 went out to Sunway Pyramid to look for locks and cork boards for the window. They visited several hardware shops and the first one they stopped by was Mr.DIY. The Sliding lock they found in Mr.Diy seems to be cheap as it cost only RM2.47 while ACE Hardware sells them for RM3. They also found a side lock in Mr.Diy which cost RM3.68.

The students were suggested by the lecturer to put cork boards on the windows in order for the children in the Orang Asli village to put their art or task to the cork board. So, the students went to Daiso to check out the size daiso offers. Unfortunately, Daiso only provide A4 sized cork board.

The team also liaise with Leon from the exterior mural group regarding the colour to paint the windows and they eventually settled for a grey and a dark blue colour. The dark blue will be used for the framing of the window while the grey will be used for the inside. The students ended up buying the materials online using Shopee.

List of materials they bought:

  • White Glue

  • Double sided sticky tape roll

  • Transparent double-sided tape roll

  • Roller paint

  • Corkboard

For the lock, they ended up buying a different lockset as the previous one they initially wanted to get were gone. So, they ended up buying the side lock that cost RM3.68. The group worked well on site and they were happy and grateful to receive this opportunity to do this project.

Group 4 - Progression (week 4-10)

During this period of time, the students from group 4 had to go survey again for the lighting as the comment they received from the lecturers were that it is expensive and the ceiling fan is too cheap. The students went out to Sunway Pyramid to find coding stickers at Daiso and white wiring at Ace Hardware. They also looked for book stands in Daiso which they found out that Mr.Diy have a cheaper alternative so they ended up not buying it from Daiso and they also liaise with Ms Noji regarding the white wiring. Ms Noji told them that the length of the wire is not long enough so the students had to go out another tie to look for the right length. The students also work on the campus to do the book coding with group 1 students.

For the first phase, 5 of the group members went to the site to execute the task accordingly. They carpooled together with the other groups and arrived at 10 am on site. The students who came for the execution day, started off their task by removing the old books and bookshelves out of the mini library. They also pilled the books together for the Orang Asli people to select the books they want to keep. While they were there, they also helped the other groups when they can. After the first execution, the students went out to buy the remaining items at Malware and IOI Mall located in Puchong to find the plug sockets for the fan and the white wire while they were there, they also bought light bulbs for the mini library. The team felt really happy to settle the task on time  and that they were given this chance to actually contribute to the community.

Group 5: Progression (week 4-10)

During this period of time, group 5 made some changes according to the feedback given by Mr.Edwin and Ms Norji regarding the fun learning aids. After that, they made an appointment with Ms Norji to meet to show their progression on the planning.and to get approval on the materials they planned to use which is MDF board and also plastic bottle cap. They also planned to use laser-cutting for the Alphabetic puzzle. The students split into groups of 4.

They worked on the board before they went to the lab for the laser cutting process. Furthermore, the students have also placed a box outside of Block E5 for other students to drop empty water bottles.

The students from the science group decided to focus on human anatomy, human 5 senses and a weather wheel. The students from the science group split the task among themselves as follows:

  • Colour Scheme & Composition

  • Laser Cutting & Material Sourcing

  • Assembling & Painting

As for the students from the maths group, Parisa,Tisyia and Yi Jie brainstorm for ideas while David tried to bring their ideas in a 3D model using Sketchup. On the 11th May, the English group and maths group went out to hunt for materials to use for the fun-learning aids. They note down the price, quality and the quantity needed for the fun-learning aids at Art friend and Daiso, Curve Mall. The students from the arts group decided to do the colour match, puzzle and built it games.

The students from each group mostly worked on AutoCAD and then export the files that can be used for laser cutting. They all found the materials that they planned to use for the fun learning aids and the materials they initially plan to use is as follows:

After completing the fun-learning aids, some of the students went on site to install the fun-learning aids on the wall. Overall, the students enjoyed the experience they have on making the fun-learning aids and they rejoiced in seeing the reactions from the kids.

Group 6 - Progression (week 4 -10)

For group 6, they did their task on campus and on site. The group 6 members split the task within themselves as follows:

  1. Promotion + Social Media -Yong Zhern

  2. Website - Tan Xi Chen

  3. Video making + editing - Royce Leow.

  4. Logistics - Song Poh Ning + Yanyi

During this period of time, the Logistics team called some of the people they found that may be able to provide transportation to go to the Mini Library (bus to transport the students to the site and trucks to transport the furniture and some equipment over to the site. However, due to the topography of the site, it is inconvenient for the bus driver to fetch us to the site and in results to that, the plan of getting a bus is out instead, the students will have to figure out a way to get to the site on their own. Yong Zhern, who handles social media works on drafts for artworks and gets approval from the group leader and Ms Norji and post it on social media every week. The logistics team had to plan out what food to buy for the students for each renovation phrase. The students were also given the task to do during their class with Mr Jeffery as he can guide them on how to use adobe illustrator and photoshop in class. The students also designed a logo, bunting, posters, website, interactive e-book for the kids and book design. Initially, the students planned to use a Lenovo tab 7 for the e book. Unfortunately, the student’s memory card that was inserted into the tablet to download the E-book into the tablet got stuck which eventually caused a lot of issues but thankfully, the students ought it with a 1-year warranty.  After the launching day, the students were proud to see the outcome of their works after the amount of effort they put in on-site and on campus. They were happy to see the kids enjoying their time and admiring the works from the other groups..

Week 9 (27th May-2nd June)

On the 27th May 2019, a representative from each group had a meeting with Ms.Norji and Mr Edwin at C9 Meeting Room, Taylor’s University, 12.00pm.

A few agendas were discussed in the meeting :

  1. Planning on the works to be delivered on site for each group to ensure the timing followed as planned

  2. Tools and equipment to be purchased

  3. Logistic

  4. Food

  5. Total numbers of manpower on site for each group

After a thorough discussion with the paint team, Ms Norji has decided to divide the transformation phase into three stages:

  • Week 10: Cleaning and Prime Coating - 1st June 2019

Based on the discussion with the Kansai Paint, our main sponsor for the event slightly changes to be made on the execution phase. Ms Khiew mentioned for the wood surface material, it requires specific primer paint to be applied to it, which once applied it will give a strong chemical odour to space for at least three days. Therefore, she advised students to clean the surface earlier and apply a minimum of 2 coats on the surface before applying the final layer as it involved interior and exterior look. Due to that, visitation on site to be done more than once as the cleaning on the surfaces will be taking a long time. Ms Norji advised group 2, 3 and 4 to divide the team members fairly on-site to perform the job.

  •  Week 11: Painting and Arrangement - 8th June 2019

  • Week 12: Launching Day - 22nd June 2019

At the end of the session, a total of 25 students from Group 2,3 and 4 will be going to site in the upcoming phases. Students were required to fill in the indemnity form before travel to the site and submit the form to Ms Norji before the event day. The list of the names and transportation as follows:

Week 9 - 1st June 2019

On the 1st June, a total of 23 students performed the task on site. There were two students unable to join due to food poisoning and fever. Students were gathered at Taylor’s University at 9.00am and it took around one hour to arrive at the site.

Once arrived at the Mini-Library. All the students took all the tools and equipment needed and performed the job assigned to their group.

Group 1

Sakash, represent the leader for Group 2 leading the work and delegated the task to the group exterior fairly whereas Vilson from Group 3, took the initiative to lead their group as Royce Kota wasn’t around due to food poisoning.

Group 4

Nadhirah was in-charge to determine the job delivered accordingly. The work was carried out as planned.  A few of Orang Asli Children, lead by Ms May helping the Group 4 team to sort the books and moving out the old furniture. Sadly, some of the books were torn and some books were fully covered with ants inside. There a lot of insects surrounded the areas once the shelving has been taken out. Some students screamed loudly as they were shocked to see the big lizard around the mini-library which they have never seen before.

Group 2

In the meantime, the group 2 team, started to scrape off the dirt from the exterior walls and paint the base coat while the group 3 students started cleaning the interior wall and the flooring.

Group 6

Roxane and Yanyi from Group 6 were assigned to handle the breakfast and lunch, while Royce was busy taking pictures and videos all over the spaces recording the process.

A few matters arise on site. Firstly, due to the absence of Royce Kota, most of the tools and equipment from Group 2 to be shared together with Group 3. They had to share the brushes and taking turns to use the tall ladder. Due to that, the process of painting a long time from what it’s expected. Other than that, the cleaning of the flooring needs to be done in the next visit to wait for the prime layer coat to be dry. The last issue arise was the weather on site as it affects the duration of drying the paint. The whole process took roughly 7 hours and before the group of students departs, they kept the tools and equipment and ensure that everything is in the right place. All the students took memorable pictures together with the Orang Asli at 6.30pm before they depart from the place. The students felt happy and satisfied with the work that they did on that day. They can’t wait to see the full transformation on the day of the launch.

Week 10 ( 3rd June- 9th June)

During the Raya break, some of the students from group 3 decided to return back to the mini library to start cleaning the interior floor and also to apply epoxy on the floor making the floor look new, clean and comfortable for the Orang Asli kids. The students first gathered at Taylor’s University at 8:50 am and then depart at 9:00 am. Once again, the journey took an hour for the students to arrive at the site. When the students arrive, they took all their tools and started to clean the floor by using Dettol soap to kill the bacteria from the floor. After the cleaning process, the students started to wipe the water out of the space in order to allow the space to dry faster.

Once the floor is dry, the students started to sweep the floor with the broom in order to make sure the floor is clean.  They covered the holes on the floor and all uneven surfaces by using white clay. While waiting for the clay to harden, the students took a break by having their lunch till 1 pm. After the break, the students started the process of painting the floor with epoxy. The colour they chose to use is epoxy middle grey. Unfortunately, due to the weather conditions that day, the process of letting the epoxy paint dry took longer. The students were unable to complete their original plan which was to apply three layers of epoxy for the floor. Therefore, the students only managed to apply one layer of epoxy for the flooring. In order to ensure that the epoxy will last longer, the students did some touch up at the surfaces that were missing some paint. The students were happy to see the result of their hard work and the students then depart the mini-library around 6 pm.

Week 11 (10th June- 16th June)

There are 57 students will be going to Serendah on the 15th June 2019 and students were required to fill in the indemnity form before travel to the site and submit the form to Ms Norji before the event day. The list of the names and transportation are as follows:
